A Senior Lecturer II in the Biology Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Brewer currently teaches BIOLOGY312 (Writing in Biology) and serves as Presiding Officer of the Faculty Senate.
Brewer is Secretary of the Science Fiction/Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA). He also founded and operates Straw Dog Writes and serves on the Program Committee for the Straw Dog Writers’ Guild, and founded and operates a writing prompt called Wandering Shop Stories at Mastodon and Bluesky.
Brewer served as Director of the Biology Computer Resource Center from 1996-2020 and as Interim Director of the Information Technology Program in 2013. He developed and taught HONORS499CK/DK (Open Science Instrumentation and Data Collection) and supervised 44 undergraduate honors theses. Previously, he also developed Information Technology in Biology Education, a graduate-level course in Biology, and Organisms: Diversity and Interactions, an online ecology course for Science Education Online.
A past President of the Board of Directors of Amherst Media, Brewer was co-founder of Western Mass Linux/Unix Users, Western Mass Drupal Camp, Hack for Western Massachusetts, Makers at Amherst Media, and New England Regional Developers Summit. He served also served as Vice President, Secretary, and webmaster of the Esperanto League for North America and Esperanto-USA.
Steven D. Brewer has published several books, including several science fiction and fantasy series and four books of haiku in Esperanto (several with English translation).
